WHO ARE YOU KNOWN AS AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART?

I’m known as Rachel Allie across social media. Art was always my favorite subject in grade school, but as I got older, I was discouraged from pursuing it further by family and teachers in favor of more academic things. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I picked it up again. I started going to concerts and meeting some insanely talented individuals who inspired me to embrace my creativity. The members of the bands I listen to also have some really amazing tattoos, which influence my style.

IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR PROCESS FOR‘GETTING INTO THE ZONE’ FOR YOUR ART?

To get “in the zone” I tend to shut myself in my room and listen to the vinyl of the album I want draw inspiration from. Music, for me, paints very vivid images in my mind. My goal is to convey the vibe I get from music through other mediums. I also clean off my entire desk because I can’t think straight with a messy workspace.

ARE THERE ANY MATERIALS THAT YOU USE REGULARLY FOR YOUR ART OR ARE ‘MUST HAVES?’

The materials I use most often are just paper and ink. I’m always sketching down little things, so I travel with sharpie pens and a sketchbook. Other must-haves for me include copic markers and photoshop if I’m digitizing the art.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR IDEATION PROCESS.

My ideation process varies. Sometimes I’ll be browsing tattoo flash sheets and find a concept that I want to explore further. Sometimes I’ll hear lyrics that I want to bring to life. I’m just always open to let things inspire me as they may.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FEARS OR WORRIES ABOUT THE ART COMMUNITY AND BEING A PART OF IT?

Some of my worries about the art community are the possibility of not being taken seriously, especially as a young artist. I’m constantly being asked, or expected, to do work for free. I’ve been asked to draw extremely elaborate tattoo designs for clients who are shocked that I’d like compensation for my labor. It worries me that people see art as not a “real” job. Everyone is constantly consuming art, even if they don’t realize it, but no one wants to pay artists.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST? (IN ANY MEDIUM)

My favorite artist is Barbie Lowenberg, a tattoo artist from Bristol, UK. She has such a unique style.
